This should be a huge help to people that are new to graphics.
Digital Art - All art made on a computer using a graphics program.
Program: Photoshop, PaintShop, Cinema 4D and etc.
Canvas (digital) - The piece of "paper" in Photoshop or any other graphics program, used to make digital art on, basically the same as the traditional canvas but, on a computer.
Large Piece (or LP) - A piece of art made on a large canvas (digital); usually larger then 400x400 pixels.
Small Piece (or SP) - A piece of art made on a small canvas (digital); usually smaller then 400x400 pixels.
Photoshop/PaintShop Pro (or PS/PSP) - The two leading graphic programs. Make LP's, make interfaces, everything!
Render - a cut-out of an image (common definition). Click Here for actual definition. *
C4D Render (or C4D) - The 3D abstract product you get when you use Cinema 4D. They are used mostly for 3-Dimensional Art or for signatures/tags.
Sprite (design-wise) - It's a 2D image; it's made using pixel art. They are usually used as "renders" for signatures/tags.
Stock - Photography taken by volunteers and submitted for use by designers. These are mostly used for Photomanipulations.
You can either get them for free, pay for them at some sites or you can consider photos taken by you also a stock.
Most of the time you need to give credit to the photographer when you use their stock, don't forget to do so, it's only fair.
Signature/Tag (or Sig and Siggy) - A SP, so it's size is usually under 400x400. Most of them contain renders, C4D renders or sprites. There is many
methods to create a Signature/Tag. Signature/Tags are usually used at forums, they are placed in a members Signature area.
Avatar - A SP, usually no bigger then 100x100 pixels. It's used at forums, in the Avatar area of a members profile. What an avatar is made of depends.
3-Dimensional Art - A LP most of the time. It's made using C4D renders.
Fractal Art - A LP most of the time. Not very popular among LP's. Fractal Art is very abstract. It's very easy to figure out that an art is a fractal art.
Fractal art mostly consists of "lines" that have some weird formations, most of the time they repeat, most of them are similar in some way, so it's easy to tell them apart from other art.
The programs used to make them is Apophysis/UltraFractal.
Painting and Airbrushing - Digitally painted/airbrushed art using the brush tool of a either PS or PSP. Most of the time they are LPs.
Photomanipulation (or Photomanip) - Almost always a LP. This type of art is mostly two stocks combined together to form one photo. Simple retouching a
picture can be considered a photomanip. But, the more complex photomanip you make, the more credit you will get.
Pixel Art - Varies from LP to SP. Any sort of art that is made using pixels. The pencil tool is mostly used in PS or PSP. It can even be made in MS Paint.
Pixel Artists get a lot of credit, because it can be a very frustrating task to do and it takes a lot of time if your doing a LP.
Animation - Art that animates, most of the time smilies/emoticons. These are made in Photoshop Imageready (or Photoshop itself) or Animation Shop.
Typography Art - Art made using only text (sometimes combined with other stuff).
Skin (ProBoards) - A half-designed template; only the main page is designed, sometimes some other images are also designed.
Skinner - Someone who makes skins/templates.
Template (ProBoards) - All the forums images are designed, sometimes some of them aren't but the majority of them are.
Everyone else can post below if they want to add some of their own.
I can't be arsed to search for examples, so if you want to do this, then go ahead, I'll link to your post when you do.
NOTE: Please do tell me if I forgot something or if something isn't correct.
And no, you are NOT allowed to post the information in this thread else where without the author or my written permission.
