Not bad for your first. The texture is nice. I'm not too sure about the drop shadow or dark spot on the top of it though. Maybe sharpen it a bit? And add a 1 px black border. Nice work.

And how may I add this boder? I know what you are talking about, its just those sort of things you need to find the right way to do it.

You could just use the pencil tool. I'm not sure if GIMP has the stroke function, which lets you do it in one step with a selection. I haven't used GIMP in more than a year so I dunno how to do that function. Perhaps someone who's actually used GIMP recently can tell you.

I used the pencil tool and zoomed in. I got a perfect result.

Much better. Zooming in is definately a useful thing to do. I'm usually in 200 or 300% zoom whenever I'm working on anything.

For the future, to add a border, go to:

Script Fu > Decor > Add Border

Then you choose the color and pixel width of the border.

It looks good, though. I can't seem to recommend anything because it's more abstract, so what you like is what you like, I guess, lol. If you need any more help with GIMP, PM me, cause I've got the general hang of it, I've been using it for a couple months now.

nice work, better than i did when i had gimp hahah. but yeah i agree with Moldy Cheese and NS, needs some sort of boarder, also the colors are really bright, my want to tone it down a little
